A visit to a restaurant may not always be a pleasant experience. Sometimes we experience various discrepancies which could either be related to ambience or the food. Most of us have a bad restaurant experience atleast once in a lifetime. At times the ambience at the restaurant is too loud or shabby or food may not be upto the mark. Most of the complaints are related to under-cooked food, presence of some insect inside the food, wrong dish served etc.
Since we visit a restaurant to get a break from home-cooked food, we seek value for money. It is every consumer’s right to ask for good quality food and it is natural to complain if the services do not match the expectations. But there is a tactful way to complain about the unsatisfactory services rather than making a mountain out of the molehills.
Let’s discuss how we can complain discreetly without creating a fuss-
It is always better to complain straightway the moment you encounter any inconsistency or irregularity with the food so served. Highlighting the problem as and when occurred gives ample time to restaurant authorities to look into the matter and extend remedial measures. For e.g. if the food is undercooked or there is any insect like thing in it, restaurant authorities can apologize for the same and replace that particular dish.
Keep your cool
The other point that should be kept in mind is that the complainant should stay calm and composed rather than creating a scene in the public place. He/she should subtly call the waiter and explain him the issue in a low tone so that the other guests do not get any idea. One can express one’s dissatisfaction over the matter and can ask for the solution rather than directly blaming the waiter for inconsistency. This is because if the food is under-cooked or is being served after a long wait, then it is not waiter’s fault but chef’s.
Ask for the remedy
One can always ask for the remedial action depending upon the nature of complaint made. It solely depends upon the complainant to ask for the corrective action according to the gravity of complaint. It is you who has to decide that whether an apology from restaurant authorities would do or you seek redressal actions like faulty dish to be replaced or need a concession. Whatever you opt for, always remember your tone should be polite and not demanding.
Bring it to the notice of manager
If you are not satisfied even after the curative measure taken, bring the matter to the notice of restaurant manager. Ask the concerned person to bring in the restaurant manager and explain him the entire case. Let him handle your matter with feasible solutions.
Ask for help outside the restaurant
In extreme cases where even after complaining to the restaurant manager, the issue doesn’t get resolved, it’s time to reach the higher authorities like consumer court. This step is viable only in the cases which are beyond the capacity of restaurant owners.
If you feel sick with the symptoms of food poisoning or any other illness, once you have left restaurant, report it to the restaurant immediately. This step should be taken only if you believe that the illness is traced back to the restaurant. If the restaurant is not looking into the matter seriously, you can approach food standards agency or local health department for the same.
In a nutshell, complaining in a restaurant is not tedious task but it should be done carefully and tactfully keeping abovementioned points in mind.
