British Museum, London

A museum about the history of the world, for the world. This is one way to describe the British Museum, London. The place gathers together over 13 million historical objects and artifacts from many ancient civilizations.

Opened more than 250 years ago, the place is the first big public and free museum all over the world and it is the second modern museum after the Oxford Museum. It was also a precursor of museum methods, bringing to the public relics of the world history. The place was constructed in a moment when the humanity began to recognize all the potential of the museums as education institutions and research centers, instead of being only a rarities storage.

The British Museum permanent collection features Aztec masks, coins of the Hellenistic period, Egyptian and Greek sculptures. Some important objects that helped the comprehension of the Ancient History are also displayed there, such as the Rosetta Stone, an ancient Egyptian granodiorite stele inscribed with an announcement issued at Memphis in 196 BC, and also parts of the Athens Parthenon. Visitors can also enjoy the huge collections of Egyptian mummies from the Pharaohs Temples, Greek relics such as the Elgin Marble.

It also has a great collection of objects that can make the visitors understand a little more the history of civilizations that used to live in Americas, Africa and Oceania. Researches keep collecting artifacts from United States, Caribbean, Peru, and Ecuador, as well as in the Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Ghana, Mali, Ethiopia, Kenya and Mozambique in order to increase the world’s knowledge about the rich and ancient cultures of those places. The British Museum is certainly a great place for the visitor to understand the past and help to shape the future.

Natural History Museum of London

Kids usually go there because of Dinos: the Paleontology exposition is famous worldwide, attracting everyone interested to see (and take pictures) with the biggest dinosaur skeletons. Adults usually go there to take their children, but most part of them is anxious to see the dinosaurs too – even those who do not admit it. Adults and children always go to The Natural History Museum, London, to have fun and see not only dinosaurs, but all the 70 million items that are part of the five principal exhibitions of the Museum ( the other are Botany, Entomology, Mineralogy and Zoology collections.)

The Natural History Museum’s story began in the XVII century, when Hans Sloane, an important British scientist, sold his nature collections to the government. The collection was completed during the years until achieve the huge number of pieces it has today – it is the largest museum on the Exhibition Road, a place famous in London for housing some of the most important museums in UK.

Visitors can also see an active volcano model. And those who luckily have never been in an earthquake situation can fell what nature is capable to do. The earthquake machine simulates the effects of a real seism, so be ready to experience it. And there is the Darwin Centre, recently opened and which has millions of biological specimens in exhibition.

The Natural History Museum is a place where everybody can discover interesting things about some of the most fascinating creatures that lived on the Earth. And the place isn’t interesting only for no-experts. This month, scientists discovered a dinosaur never noticed before. It had been hidden in the middle of the Natural History Museum’s collections for 90 years and just now we know it exists. If the museum is so full new discoveries even for experts it’s easy to imagine what normal people can learn there.

Vatican Museums, Rome

Located outside of Saint Peter’s Square, the entrance for the Vatican Museums, Rome, hide an amazing world: it’s one of the biggest museums in the world, a place where almost 5 million people go every year. The Vatican Museums were funded in 1506 by Pope Julius II. In that year, a sculpture was found near the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, in Rome. So, the Pope decided to investigate its origin and discovered it was an ancient sculpture, – according to mythology it was from the legendary city of Troy. The Pope brought it to Vatican and opened the place to public visitation. It was the beginning of the now 500 years old museum.

Vatican Museums, Rome

Today the Vatican Museums includes many different institutions in the same place, as, for example, the Museum Pio-Clementino, created by Clement XIV in 1771. There, you will have the opportunity to visit 54 galleries full of busts and Greek statues, for example. The other museums that are part of the Vatican complex are the Museo Chiaramonti, Museo Gregoriano Etrusco, Museo Egiziano and the Vatican Pinacoteca. Some of the most important Vatican Museums’ attractions are Caravaggio’s and Leonardo da Vinci’s paintings and works by Raphael, the Italian painter and architect from the Renaissance period.

In the Vatican Museum there are also Roman, Greek and Egypt sculptures. And there is the greatest attraction of the Museums (and probably from Vatican itself): the Sistine Chapel, the place where Michelangelo painted The Last Judgment, a canonical fresco in the ceiling of the chapel which is known worldwide as his best artistic work.

Tate Modern, London

Whether it is because of the turbine hall and the spectacular installations, whether it is because of the outstanding collection of modern and contemporary art or even because of the building itself, that faces the St. Paul’s Cathedral, the fact is that the Tate Modern, London, became one of the most famous museums of the world. Within little more than 10 years, the place already attracts over 5 million visitors per year.

Opened in 2000, the museum did not use to display its collection by date, but by category. This added a different conception in the way people visit a museum and also make the gaps in Tate Modern’s collection not so evident. Little by little, other art pieces were acquired by the museum. Nowadays, the Tata Moderns offers a permanent free exhibition. Among the items in exhibition, the visitors have the opportunity to enjoy great names of art such as Pablo Picasso, Jean Arp, Umberto Boccioni, Giorgio de Chirico, Natalya Goncharova and many others. The place also offers interactive art, with the involvement of the visitor, which makes a museum visit much more interesting and fun.

The building, an old electric plant, is really breath-taking. The architect, Gilbert Scott, designer of the London typical red telephone boxes, planned the giant brick building in the 40’s, at the south bank of Thames River and in front of the St. Paul’s Cathedral. The building was meant to be powerful and magnificent. The place is so popular that an increase of 60% in its area is being planned. The Tate Modern made of London one of the most desirable destinations for those who want to see contemporary art.

Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid

Tourists who are planning to spend a couple of days in Spain know by heart some of the most important places to visit. The Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid is surely one of those sites. Created in 1819, it was first named “The Royal Museum”. At the beginning, it hosted only a few important works from Spanish artists, but nowadays its collection includes over 7,600 paintings, 8,200 drawings, 1,000 sculptures and many other artistic works. Inside Museo del Prado it’s possible to find some of the most important exhibitions of European Art, fact that makes it as important as the famous Louvre Museum, for example. El Prado is one of the most popular museums worldwide – every year almost 3 million people visit the place.

If you are going to visit Museo Nacional del Prado you certainly are looking forward to see its most famous work in exhibition: the painting Las Meninas, by the famous Spanish painter Diego Velázquez. Leaving from El Prado without seeing Las Meninas would be similar to leaving Louvre without staring La Gioconda at least for a few minutes, and, of course, nobody would do this.

Other important works that everybody must see during a visit in El Prado are paintings by Rubens (“The Three Graces”), Rembrandt (“Artemisia”), Bosch (“The Garden of Earthly Delights”) and Francisco Goya (“The Third of May 1808”). By the way, those who appreciate Goya’s work will really love Museo Nacional del Prado: the museum has the biggest Goya’s collection is the world.

The Musée d’Orsay, Paris, located in the heart of the city, alongside of the Senna River and in front of the Jardin des Tuilleries, is one of the most visited museums in France. The place is set in an old train station built in 1900 that was transformed in museum in the 80’s preserving the original architecture.

A visit to a restaurant may not always be a pleasant experience. Sometimes we experience various discrepancies which could either be related to ambience or the food. Most of us have a bad restaurant experience atleast once in a lifetime. At times the ambience at the restaurant is too loud or shabby or food may not be upto the mark. Most of the complaints are related to under-cooked food, presence of some insect inside the food, wrong dish served etc.

Since we visit a restaurant to get a break from home-cooked food, we seek value for money. It is every consumer’s right to ask for good quality food and it is natural to complain if the services do not match the expectations. But there is a tactful way to complain about the unsatisfactory services rather than making a mountain out of the molehills.

Let’s discuss how we can complain discreetly without creating a fuss-

Act instantaneously

It is always better to complain straightway the moment you encounter any inconsistency or irregularity with the food so served. Highlighting the problem as and when occurred gives ample time to restaurant authorities to look into the matter and extend remedial measures. For e.g. if the food is undercooked or there is any insect like thing in it, restaurant authorities can apologize for the same and replace that particular dish.

Keep your cool

The other point that should be kept in mind is that the complainant should stay calm and composed rather than creating a scene in the public place. He/she should subtly call the waiter and explain him the issue in a low tone so that the other guests do not get any idea. One can express one’s dissatisfaction over the matter and can ask for the solution rather than directly blaming the waiter for inconsistency. This is because if the food is under-cooked or is being served after a long wait, then it is not waiter’s fault but chef’s.

Ask for the remedy

One can always ask for the remedial action depending upon the nature of complaint made. It solely depends upon the complainant to ask for the corrective action according to the gravity of complaint. It is you who has to decide that whether an apology from restaurant authorities would do or you seek redressal actions like faulty dish to be replaced or need a concession. Whatever you opt for, always remember your tone should be polite and not demanding.

Bring it to the notice of manager

If you are not satisfied even after the curative measure taken, bring the matter to the notice of restaurant manager. Ask the concerned person to bring in the restaurant manager and explain him the entire case. Let him handle your matter with feasible solutions.

Ask for help outside the restaurant

In extreme cases where even after complaining to the restaurant manager, the issue doesn’t get resolved, it’s time to reach the higher authorities like consumer court. This step is viable only in the cases which are beyond the capacity of restaurant owners.

Report sickness

If you feel sick with the symptoms of food poisoning or any other illness, once you have left restaurant, report it to the restaurant immediately. This step should be taken only if you believe that the illness is traced back to the restaurant. If the restaurant is not looking into the matter seriously, you can approach food standards agency or local health department for the same.

In a nutshell, complaining in a restaurant is not tedious task but it should be done carefully and tactfully keeping abovementioned points in mind.

Sometimes we have a bad experience while dealing with a police officer as he may be rude or sounds unreasonable. Also, one may feel that the officer is misusing his authority which can lead to sheer frustration. In such a scenario, it becomes all the way necessary to lodge a complaint against such officer.

When to lodge a complaint?

Since you are a civilian, you can file a complaint in the event of bad conduct on the part of a police officer. Else you can make a complaint about the officer on someone else’s behalf provided you have the written confirmation or authorization from them.

Following circumstances calls for filing a complaint-

If the officer has used unnecessary force.

If he has spoken bad words.

If he has jeopardize your fundamental rights.

If he has arrested you without any valid proof.

If you are not a direct victim but can lodge a complaint if he has behaved badly with some other person.

A complaint should include-

The first and foremost important thing is that the complaint should be made within 12 months of the incident held. Also, the complaint so made should include the all details like what happened, how, when, who is the culprit, who witnessed it, the damage so occurred and the valid proofs etc.

Gather the Facts

It is very important to get all the details before filing a complaint. Having valid evidence against the officer is the most crucial thing and frames the basis of complaint lodging. Further it is important to note the time and place of the incident so occurred. Moreover, recording the identity of the police officer through his badge number or vehicle number is mandatory. Other important consideration is to gather all the details like name, contact number, address etc of witnesses.

If the incident has been recorded in CCTV footage or if anyone has taken photographs of the incident, it can work as a great tool against the officer’s bad behavior and can help a lot. Also, look out for someone who wants to complain about the same officer or incident. It will give weightage to your case.

How to complain?

You can complain to the Police Complaints Authority. Further, taking a legal advice also a good idea as it can help your case to the great extent.

Substitutes to the formal complaints

If you are reluctant to lodge a formal complaint, you can try other ways like asking a senior officer to look into the matter without following the formal procedure. The officer can take an informal route to the complaint handling.

How complaints are dealt with?

There is a separate department in police service that handles complaints lodged by any civilian against the misbehavior by a particular officer. The department conducts a thorough scrutiny taking into account all the details of the case, evidences and statements given by the witnesses under the guidance and supervision of an independent member of PCA.

The abovementioned procedure can help you to seek redressal in case of misconduct done by a police officer.

Handling a complaint is always a tedious task especially if you belong to the hospitality industry. The hotel staff including front-desk officers, guest -relation officers and house-keepers come in direct contact with the guests, therefore they need to be extra cautious about the guests’ comfortable stay at the hotel. Moreover, the staff needs to be aware of the fact that they do not create any unnecessary situation of tiff with the guests. In case the situation like this arises, it is crucial on the part of the staff to handle it with utmost maturity.

Even though you are a graduate in hospitality management and must have read enough on handling guests’ complaints but sometimes in real scenario it becomes difficult to apply all that you have read.

Therefore, it is very necessary to take the right steps towards handling guest’s complaints, if you do not want to earn the bad name about your hotel. To start with let’s categorize the guest complaints-

Voiced complaint

Unvoiced complaint

Both kinds of complaints portray the dissatisfaction on the part of the guests. Hence, these need to be redressed at the earliest. After all, they spend money to enjoy the luxurious services of the hotel and seek an incredible experience. On the other hand, guests are the sole source of revenue of the hotels so the hotel authorities should make a point to take care of their guests at every cost.

Once a guest goes dissatisfied from your hotel, there are big chances that he will spread the bad word about it. So, instead of giving them a chance to complain, extend great service that turns them into your regular customers.

Let’s contemplate how-

Add to your memory- Guests are the best source of publicity and advertisement. If they speak bad about your services, it will tarnish the hotel’s image forever and if they go happy, they will refer your hotel to their kith and kin. So, before getting involved in a heated argument with a guest, remember this golden rule and stay cool.

Keep your self-confidence intact- To handle the complaints smoothly, build your self-confidence. Building self-confidence is not a difficult task as it can be developed through experience as well as your knowledge. Whenever a guest comes to seek your help make sure, he feels that he has come to the right person.

Give respect; earn respect- It is first and foremost important duty of hotel officials to respect all their guests alike irrespective of race, culture, language, appearance, religion, cast, color etc. If you respect your guests the right way, there will be least chances of any brawl occurring.

Frame an optimistic outlook- Rather than fussing about the complaint, take it in a healthy manner. Even if you are not able to meet their needs, make sure atleast you respond in the best possible way. Never ever answer in a negative way by saying ‘No’. Instead say, ‘We’ll try our best to provide you this service or we’ll try to improve on the particular matter. Be open to their ideas, views, suggestions and feedback and acknowledge them that their suggestions are always welcomed.

Be a patient listener- It is very important for the people in the hospitality industry to become good listeners. Rather than just speaking and boasting about your services, let the guest speak his heart out. Further, if you listen to what guest has to say in an attentive manner, he will develop a sense of belongingness. Never ever, give a smile when the guest is frowning or is in a serious mode.

So, if you take care of abovementioned points, there won’t be any complaints in the first place and even if it arises, you will be able to manage it with utmost grace and dignity. Get set to win the hearts of your guests with your flamboyance and charm.

Feedback is a popular word nowadays. A lot of people and companies say they want a feedback about their products of services. But by the end of the day, only a few are really prepared to listen to the complaints addressed to them.

Maybe is human nature, maybe it’s just the culture. But no one likes to be criticized. The problem is when they take it personally instead of trying to learn something about it. For example, when a business receives complaints or negative feedback it is a good opportunity to review the processes and actually improve.

Complaints usually come from costumers trying to tell how to get better and what would bring them back to your business in the future. Instead of losing hair and being upset it’s time to get all this information and turn it into something good. Instead of looking at the complainers as angry and annoying individuals, try to listen carefully to what they have to say. If you want to succeed at any business, it’s imperative to know not only the good feedbacks, but also the bad ones.

Of course it’s amazing when costumers say positive things about you. It is that good feeling that your services or products are making everyone satisfied and you are making it right. However, how you are going to improve if you only listening to things people like about the company? What’s the point in getting better if you are doing it right? Well, nobody does it right all the time. After recognizing the great value complaints can add to your business. The good feedback reinforces the positive things you need to keep doing, but the negatives are more valuable because they will help you to develop. It is a great opportunity!

It’s is difficult to compete with larger companies, when talking about reach and pricing. So, a small business should keep track more than ever about what the clients are saying. It is a must to know and understand what makes the costumers loyal. Listening to then, through a well trained costumer service distinguish your business from the others and creates a great relation with your clients, who will also indicate your services or products to their friends.

So, how to react?

After getting a negative comment or feedback, ensure to apologize to the customer as soon as possible. Then, if the complaints come through internet, try to turn the conversation in to a private way. For example, ask the phone number of the costumer or the email. When you understand the concerns of the client, if it was a problem offer the suggestions for making it right. But don’t offer too much or more than you can afford. First because not so honest person might complain even if they believe nothing was wrong or, second, you need to make sure the costumer is satisfied and that you do something is in your power to correct it.

Leading a team can be a tough task even for the most experienced manager. Because of the nature of the work, you cannot expect listening to direct reports every time make a mistake. As a result, much of what a manager has to learn will depend on their own capacity of analysis and feeling.

Besides the necessity of a quality educational training and courses, managers need also to improve their interpersonal skills in order to successfully deal with different personalities and take the best of their teams. Just as everything in life, the trial and error is a very efficient way to learn, since our mistakes have lots to teach. Listen to the experiences of other skilled managers is another way to achieve a good knowledge in the field.

Another useful tip is to make interviews with the employees that are leaving the company, so they will feel more comfortable to say what they think about your managerial skills, but it will only help if you are wise enough to see a criticism as an opportunity to grow as a leader.

One of the most common employees complaints are about the favoritism that some managers have over some employees. If the members of the staff suspect that you have your favorite, they will automatically blame it for all the problems they could face at work. Therefore, your tendency to benefit one employee over the others can become a huge cause of conflict in the office. So, pay attention to your acts and, if you think that you might be favoring some employees over others, be aware of your behavior and make a conscious effort to provide same opportunities to all the members of your team.

Other difficult think to deal with is the poor communication among the team. Sometimes, people complain that they do not get clear instructions from the manager, so they are not able to know what is expected from them. It is important to explain exactly what kind of result you are expecting from a new task, including the dead line and the set progress dates. Clear communication is the only thing that ensures that job will be successfully done.

It is also very important that you know how to successfully manage the tasks as well. Some managers do not want to delegate, feeling that they have to control every aspect of the process, giving few space for the employees to manage their own tasks. This kind of attitude is the best way to deliver a wrong project. When you try to control every single step of your team, the only thing you are doing is creating a stressful work environment. Stop checking on every detail of the project and let your employees to take their own decisions, making authority over the project. The better thing to do is to establish periodic dates to check on the progress of the project.

Finally, the art of being a successful manager is related to the balance between giving direction to the members of the staff and allowing them to make decisions. Make your team identify with the vision of the company and understand how their work contributes to this vision. To becoming an effective leader, you have to be confident and use the complaints to improve your expertise and build health work environment.

If you are buying something, you expect that the product or service will meet your needs and expectations. Every time you feel that what you bought is not what you get, it is your right to write a formal complaint

If you are buying something, you expect that the product or service will meet your needs and expectations. Every time you feel that what you bought is not what you get, it is your right to write a formal complaint to the company demanding the replacement or refund. However, sometimes the company does not know how to deal with it and simply ignore your protest. There are some tips that can help you to be listened.

The first one is to write to the person in charge. Sometimes people do not know who this person is and just write a ‘Whom it may concern’ on the top of the letter. Well, in this case you should consider the possibility of the letter does not concern anybody and it will end up on a pile of paper. If you really want your problem to be sold, spend some time trying to find out who is the responsible for the complaints. Visiting the contact page on the company’s website can also help. Finally, call the company and ask for the name of the person you should send your complaint.

Being professional is always a good way to be respected. You might be right and might be truly upset with the company but the best way to be listened is to keep calm and write in a polite and respected way. In general, the companies are concerned about costumers’ complaint and if your formal protest was sent to the right person, you will probably be read. The department that receive this kind of letters has as one of the main duty to make the clients happy again and make them keep buying from the company, so, the only thing you will get by being disrespectful, threatening, argumentative or just plain rude, is the resentment from the person who would try to help you.

In addition, try to be as clear as possible in your complaint. You have to be direct and simple. Do not bury your real objection in a confuse story just to make it seems bigger and most important than it is. Provide a brief description of the situation and all the trials you had to solve the problem. You can also tell them what kind of solution you expect from the company.

Keep in mind that customer complaints are a common issue that every company faces, so, many of them already have polices to deal with it and none of them want their consumers to be unhappy.

Those who deal with the public know that no one likes to hear complaints from unhappy customers. Rather, entrepreneurs take a lot of care to avoid them. But, what can we do, mistakes happen, and negative criticism of a customer might be very useful to correct these flaws. If the claim is listened in a constructive manner, it can bring improvements in service and customer loyalty. Some tips can help transform the dissatisfaction of the buyer in a positive result for the company.

Answer Fast

When the costumer does not like a service, they usually do not complain directly to the company, but exposes the displeasure to family and neighbors. Thus, if anyone bothers to make a formal complaint, this person certainly expects an answer. If the client feel ignored, it will probably look for another company, and you will lose the opportunity to correct a possible failure in service or product.

Listen Carefully

It is important to give the consumer an opportunity to vent and be heard. Try not to be justified before the customer has time to speak your mind and realize that you are interested in solving the problem. Understand clearly what upset the customer is essential to reach a solution that is positive for both sides.

Always Apologize

It is not necessary agree with everything that has been exposed by an unsatisfied customer, but it is very important to accept and validate customer dissatisfaction. Phrases like “We understand how you feel,” or “That must have really upset you” may be good choices for this cause empathy. Never blame a single employee or specific department for the problem. Try to talk in the name of the whole company and avoid defensive language.

Keep Calm

Some customers will lose control, but it is essential that you keep yours. For this you need to distance yourself emotionally and not face the complaint as a personal offense. Another tip is to put yourself in the position of the client. And remember: resist the urge to raise your voice, or return an e-mail with a rude sarcastic message.

Fix the Problem

When a customer complains, it usually is not interested in the cause of the problem, but what he really hopes is that something is done to resolve the issue. Once you understand what kind of providence the customer expects and evaluate the pros and cons of different options, suggest a solution to put it into practice. Sometimes a small gesture, such as offering a future discount or a gift, you can regain consumer confidence.

Make a “Follow-up”

If you answered with a customer complaint e-mail, and got no response, resend the message or try to find out if it worked. It is important to evaluate the results of responses and solutions that are given to see if they work.

Everybody who has a company that deal with clients knows that dealing with unsatisfied clients can be really difficult and sometimes disastrous. Customer complaints will always be an unpleasant business, does not matter whether the complain is only a simple and easy to solve one or it is bringing a lot of bad publicity to the company and, therefore, generating an undesirable image among other potential clients. Conducting a disappointed client’s complaint in the right way can resolve the protest fast and efficiently. To accomplish a desirable complaint management, it is necessary to handle the criticism in a way that will make clients and company happy.

An upset customer that might have a strong and genuine objection concerning your company’s services deserves even more attention and a good treatment. You have to keep in mind that the customers have the right complain and even take legal actions against your company if somehow you have made a mistake. When this happens, you are facing a critical situation and the way you will solve the problem you determine if the consumer will still buying your servicer or if they will never come back and advise their friends against you.

So, for you to have a successful complaint management, you have to answer the consumers quickly. The longer you take to answer a complaint, the angrier the consumer will be. So, do not let them waiting for an official position for over a week, the only think you are getting is more resentment towards you.

Always be polite, even if the consumer is so angry that he or she lost their minds. Does not matter if they are right or not, be professional and keep a business like attitude concerning the complaint. Never takes it personally. If you think that the client has no reason in his or hers complaint, you can be strict and try to show the point of the company in a polite way, using your tact and good manners.

However, if you notice that the company actually made a mistake, the best thing to do is to refund for the service or replace the item. Do not expect your consumers to pay for a service if it was not delivered in an appropriate way. The same thing is applied for broken items or in the case that you promise something in the advertisement that is not actually true. You might lose your profit for that specific thing, but you will ensure that the client will come back and recommend your services to the others.
